Description
No 34 and 34a on Church Street is a detached house that now serves as a second-hand dealer's shop. It dates from the late 17th century to the 18th century and is built of rubblestone with a stone slate roof featuring coped verges and ashlar stacks. The building has a symmetrical design with two projecting wings at the rear. It stands two stories tall with an attic and has three windows across the front.
The central entrance features a six-fielded panelled door set in a bolection-moulded case, topped with a pediment that has a finial base. On either side of the door are paired 12-pane sash windows framed by moulded architraves. To the left is the door for No 34a, which also has a moulded case and wooden pediment. The first floor includes a central 12-pane sash window flanked by 16-pane sashes, all in wooden cases with moulded lintels.
The attic features two Cotswold-type dormers with coped verges, saddlestones, and casement windows. At the rear, there is a ground floor door and a four-light Gothick sash window on the first floor, with projecting gabled wings on either side. The left wing is built of rubblestone and has a single window with three-light ovolo mullioned windows, complete with drip moulds on both the ground and first floors. The right wing is constructed of brick with a stone slate roof, also featuring coped verges and saddlestones.
Inside, the building has deep chamfered ceiling beams and moulded door cases. The left front room has a single story with a door that has a semi-elliptical brick head and one sash window.
