Description

The Brass Knocker is a detached house located on High Street in Saltford, dated 1747, with some minor alterations from the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed and squared rubble with stone dressings, featuring ashlar copings and a gabled pantile roof that has stone stacks at the gable ends, one of which has a brick cap.

The building has a double-depth plan with a rear gabled range, possibly for a staircase, and later rear outshuts. The exterior is three stories high and has a symmetrical north facade with a central doorway. The windows are framed in plain stone architraves and there are continuous string-courses above the ground and first-floor windows. The ground floor includes a multi-paned 18th-century shop window on the left and an 18th-century 9/6-sash window with thick glazing bars on the right. The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes, with horns on those in the outer bays. There are two small paired casements on the second floor and an additional casement on the west return wall. The rear roof slope features three late 20th-century roof lights and casement windows in the rear range. The entrance has a six-panel door set in a plain surround, topped with a flat stone hood supported by brackets.

Historically, the building has served various purposes, including as an inn, a shop, and the village post office, which explains the presence of the 18th-century shop window.
