Description
The Old Rectory is a rectory that has been converted into a house, built in 1814 with alterations around 1840 and later changes in the 19th century. The building features a combination of render and coursed rubble stone dressings, with ashlar bays and copings, and has shallow-pitched slate roofs topped with ashlar stacks at the ends and ridges.
The structure has an irregular L-shaped plan, with a staircase located at the angle of the two ranges. It is two stories tall and has three-window ranges facing south and east. The south facade consists of three elements: two outer bay windows with three lights that extend above the eaves, featuring tall casements on the ground floor and plate-glass sashes on the first floor. There are recessed panels between the window areas and blind parapets above the eaves. The middle bay on the first floor has a single plate-glass sash.
On the east facade, there is a central tripartite porch with glazed openings that have a Carnarvon arch, flanking a part-glazed, panelled door. To the right, there is a projecting gabled bay with tall paired casements on the ground floor, a bracketed cornice, sunk panels with roundels at mid-floor level, and two plate-glass sashes above with blind semicircular-arched heads. Below the gable, there is a keyed oculus and oversailing eaves.
Inside, the building features an 1814 staircase that includes a cast-iron handrail and floral balusters. The bay window design is influenced by the Bath Italianate style associated with architects HE Goodridge and Wilson and Wilcox.
