Description

Springside is a detached house located on High Street in Saltford. It dates from the early 18th century or possibly earlier, with some minor alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of squared and coursed rubble with stone dressings, featuring ashlar copings and a gabled pantile roof with ashlar stacks at the gable ends.

The house has a double-depth plan and an extension at the rear under a catslide roof. It is two stories high and has a symmetrical three-window front facing south. The central doorway is flanked by string courses above the ground and first-floor windows. The outer bay windows on both floors are 12-pane sashes set in moulded architraves with sills. The second floor has a single central window, which is a paired casement set in a stone surround with a sill. The doorway features a moulded architrave and a flat stone hood supported by brackets. The original door has been replaced by late 19th-century two-leaf French windows with margin glazing. Above the first-floor level, there is a sundial or clock face with a pediment.

On the west return wall, there are three 19th-century casement windows and a glazed gabled porch that includes an inner part-glazed, panelled door. The upper storey windows were added in the mid-20th century, according to local information. The deeds for the property date back to 1699, indicating its long-standing presence in the area.
