Description

This is a house, dating from the early 18th century and located on the south side of Canon Square in Melksham. It is constructed of dressed stone with a stone slate roof featuring a coped verge and brick stacks. The house is three storeys high, with a symmetrical façade of five windows. The central doorway has a six-panelled door set within a cyma moulded doorcase, topped with a flat stone hood supported by brackets. A pair of 12-pane sashes are framed within a cyma moulded case with mullions to either side. A plat band runs along the front, above which are five 12-pane sashes with segmental heads, keystones, and imposts to the first floor. The second floor also features a plat band, with a central blind window flanked by a pair of sashes; all windows are blind except for the sash on the second window from the right. A moulded eaves cornice tops the façade. The right return side has a single three-light ovolo mullioned window to the first floor. At the rear, there are blocked windows and a single 16-pane sash to the second floor. The rear roof pitch is double-Roman tiled. An early 19th-century wing, with a Welsh slate roof, features flat mullioned windows over two storeys. The interior was not inspected. The building was undergoing renovation in July 1984.
