Description
The Grange and Orchard Hall is a late 17th century vicarage that was later converted into a children's home. It was remodeled in 1877 by the architect G.E. Street. The building is constructed of rubblestone with a stone slate roof featuring coped verges and ashlar stacks. It has two storeys and an attic, with four windows on the front facade.
The central door is set back and features a 19th century porch with a case in the Perpendicular style. Flanking the door are projecting gabled wings; the right wing contains a group of three 18th century eight-pane sash windows in beaded cases, while the left wing has a three-light mullioned and transomed window along with a two-light mullioned window, all dating from the 19th century and featuring relieving arches above. On the first floor, there is a cross window above the door and a pair of twelve-pane sash windows in beaded cases to the right, while the left side has two groups of casements in splayed mullioned cases. The attic gable of the right wing includes one three-light mullioned window.
The left return of the building has two storeys, a string course, and features one ogee-headed tall ten-pane sash window and a pair of tall ten-pane sashes in a chamfered case with a central mullion and ogee head. At the rear, there is a wing from 1877 made of dressed stone, with a stone slate roof and coped verges, which includes the same ogee-headed tall sashes in a ground floor bay and on the first floor. The central part of the rear is recessed between the 19th century wings and has a bow-fronted porch with a beaded door case and window. The first floor features a pair of 18th century eight-pane sashes in a beaded case with a mullion, and the second floor gable has two casements. To the left, there is a projecting wing from around 1877 with two-light chamfered mullioned windows on the first floor, and a 20th century garage abuts the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected.
