Description
The Melksham War Memorial is a memorial cross dating to 1919, constructed by Messrs H Davis and Son of Melksham to the design of Lawrence A Turner FSA. It is built of dressed Doulting stone.
The memorial comprises a gabled Latin cross, topped with a floreate capital, set upon a tapering shaft. Below this is a square double plinth with four steps leading up to an octagonal base. Bronze plaques are affixed to the lower plinth, inscribed "IN MEMORY OF/ OUR MEN WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR OF/ 1914 - 1919/ (NAMES)," and to the upper plinth, "IN MEMORY OF/ OUR MEN WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 - 1945/ (NAMES)." The cross displays an IHS inscription on both faces.
The memorial stands within a post-war garden of remembrance, which includes low stone walls, planters, and a post and rail fence, situated on a traffic island to the north of the entrance to the parish churchyard. Certain features of the garden, including the walls, planters, and fence, are not considered to contribute to the group value of the memorial.
