Description
Two attached houses, dating from the early to late 18th century, are situated on the south side of Canon Square in Melksham. The houses are built of rendered dressed stone, with a hipped gabled roof covered in stone slates and an ashlar stack to the left. They are arranged over three storeys, with a symmetrical facade of three windows each. Number 7 features a six-panelled door within a moulded architrave, and a single 20-pane sash window to the left. Number 9 has a door enclosed by a classical wooden case with a cornice, and two 16-pane sash windows and one window to the right. A continuous string course runs along the first floor, below three 16-pane sash windows. The second floor has five casement windows. All the front windows are later insertions, although the blocked remains of earlier windows are visible beneath the rendering. The rear of Number 7 includes a wing with two and three-light cyma mullioned windows, along with 20th-century casements and a mansard roof. The rear of Number 9 features early 19th-century extensions containing 20th-century windows. The interior of the properties was not inspected, and Number 7 was undergoing renovation at the time of a survey in July 1984.
