WHITEPARISH NEWTON LANE SU 22 SW (east side) 7/303 Newton Cottage (formerly listed as Cottage 130 yds. S.W. of White's 23/3/60 Farm, with barn adjoining, Newton)

Detached cottage. C16, 1980s addition to east. Square-panelled timber-frame on crucks, half-hipped tiled roof, formerly thatched, brick stacks. Gable end to road. 3 bays, former central open hall. One storey and attic, 3 windows. Four 2-light casements to ground floor, three C20 gabled dormers to attic. Left return is gable facing road with exposed base cruck. Rear has C20 door in porch, extensions and attic dormers, some timber-framed panels with wattle and daub infill. Interior not accessible at time of survey (January 1985), but said to contain deeply chamfered beam on moulded jowled post, of ceiling inserted over hall mid C17, part of timber-framed chimney survives, though partly rebuilt in brick C17. Original roof recorded by RCHM; curved wind braces to hall and eastern bays. (Unpublished records of RCHM (England), Salisbury).
