Description

Newton Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 16th century, with an addition made in the 1980s to the east. The building features a square-panelled timber frame supported by crucks and has a half-hipped tiled roof, which was formerly thatched, along with brick stacks. The gable end faces the road and the cottage consists of three bays, with a former central open hall. It is one storey high with an attic, and has three windows. The ground floor has four two-light casements, while the attic features three 20th-century gabled dormers. The left side of the cottage has a gable facing the road, showcasing an exposed base cruck. The rear includes a 20th-century door set in a porch, along with extensions and attic dormers, and some timber-framed panels with wattle and daub infill. The interior was not accessible during the survey in January 1985, but it is reported to contain a deeply chamfered beam on a moulded jowled post, which is part of a ceiling that was inserted over the hall in the mid-17th century. A portion of the timber-framed chimney remains, although it has been partly rebuilt in brick during the 17th century. The original roof has been documented by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, featuring curved wind braces in the hall and eastern bays.
