Description

Welsteads Cottage is a detached cottage, originally a single dwelling, now divided into two separate homes. The core of the building dates to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with later additions constructed in the 1980s. It is a timber-frame building with brick nogging and a tiled roof, featuring brick stacks. The cottage has an L-shaped layout. The original three-bay south range, now Welsteads Cottage, has a baffle entry. This part of the building is one storey with an attic, and has three windows. A ledged door is set within a 17th-century timber-framed porch on the right, and to the left are two 2-light casement windows and one 4-light casement window. The attic has a gabled dormer with a 2-light and a 3-light casement window. The north range, dating from the early 17th century and now No. 1 Welsteads, has a 20th-century extension incorporating reused timbers in the same style. The right return faces The Street and has 20th-century casement windows. The rear of the building features a 20th-century door and casement windows, along with a 20th-century gabled dormer on a small extension at the south end. The interior of the south range includes deeply chamfered beams with ogee stops. A former hall incorporates a chamfered open fireplace lintel on brick jambs, planked doors with strap hinges, and a staircase on the west side of the fireplace. The north range, originally the service range, has chamfered beams with run-out stops on jowled posts and a cambered open fireplace lintel on brick jambs.
