Description

Shurnhold Farmhouse is an early 18th-century farmhouse located on the west side of Bath Road in Melksham. The building is constructed from rubblestone and features a stone slate roof with coped verges and ashlar stacks. It has an L-plan layout and is two stories tall with an attic, containing four windows.

The entrance door is situated on the facade facing the road, framed in a cyma-moulded case, and to the left is a 2-light cyma-mullioned window. On the first floor, there is a single 2-light cyma-mullioned window above a string course. The right wing projects forward and has a central blocked chamfered door case, which now contains a 2-light chamfered window. There are also 2-light cyma-mullioned windows on either side of this wing, with a string course raised above the door lintel. The first floor of this wing features three 2-light cyma-mullioned windows.

The right return of the building is a gable end with a blocked 2-light cyma-mullioned window that has a drip mould at the ground, first, and attic floors. The rear of this wing includes two 2-light cyma-mullioned windows on the first floor and a single-storey outshot. The rear of the main wing has a stone canted bay and cyma-mullioned windows on both the ground and first floors. The wing with the entrance is slightly later in date than the wing that is at a right angle to the road. The interior has not been inspected.
