Description

The Red Lion Public House is a row of attached cottages that have been converted into a public house, dating from the early 18th century. The building is constructed of rubblestone with a stone slate roof and stands two stories high with seven windows.

No 1 features a six-fielded-panelled door set in a chamfered case, flanked by two-light cyma-mullioned windows on either side. No 3 is divided into two parts: the left cottage has two doors in moulded wooden cases and two 2-light cyma-mullioned windows, along with one 3-light cyma-mullioned window. The right cottage has a central chamfered door case with one 3-light ovolo mullioned window on each side.

On the first floor, No 1 has a timber-framed gable with a wooden casement and a 2-light cyma-mullioned window to the right. No 3 has three 2-light cyma-mullioned windows to the left and two 2-light ovolo mullioned windows to the right. All windows are fitted with leaded casements. The rear of the building features similar mullioned and casement windows as those on the front.

The interior of the public house has been updated in the 20th century. This building is significant as it represents the only remaining group of early 18th-century cottages on this street, with the others having been demolished or altered.
