Description
Baptist Church, built in 1776 and restored in 1879, is constructed of rubblestone with a steeply pitched hipped roof covered in double Roman tiles. It has a square plan and is two storeys high with three windows. The original entrance door is located on the right side, featuring six-panelled double doors in a staff-moulded case with a pulvinated frieze and pediment supported by pilasters. On either side of the entrance are sash windows in beaded cases. The first floor has three round-headed sash windows with four panes each, also in beaded cases. The right and left sides of the building each have two ground floor sashes and two round-headed sashes with four panes on the first floor. Attached to the left side is a 19th-century entrance hall and Sunday school. A late 18th-century cartouche is found on the left side.
Inside, the church features galleries on three sides dating from 1795, which have elaborate cast iron balconies supported by cast iron columns with composite capitals. The wooden pews and pulpit were added during the 1879 restoration. The ceiling includes a plaster cornice and a central rosette adorned with acanthus leaves. There are marble wall tablets commemorating the Ledyard family from 1790 and Joshua Russell from 1840, both in classical style. The removal of Victorian pews was proposed in 1984.
