Description

The York Guest House, now a hotel, is a late 18th-century house with a rear wing, located on Church Walk in Melksham. The main house is built of painted brick with ashlar quoins and dressed stone returns, having a stone slate roof with coped verges and ashlar stacks. The rear wing, No. 26a, projects from No. 28 and is two storeys high with one window. It features a chamfered door case, and two-light cym-mullioned windows on both the ground and first floors.

No. 28 is a symmetrical two-storey and attic house with a six-window front. The central entrance features an eight-panelled Venetian door with a fanlight, set within a finely reeded arched door case with a keystone, and narrow sash side-lights in reeded cases. A good cast-iron boot-scraper is located to the right of the door. Either side of the doorway are 16-pane sashes in beaded architraves. A plat band runs along the front. The first floor has five 12-pane sashes in beaded architraves, along with one smaller, later sash. Two large hipped dormers contain three-light beaded mullioned windows. The right return displays a three-light beaded mullioned window to the ground floor and attic floor. The left return and a single-storey rear wing incorporate a chamfered door case with a flat stone hood on brackets, and cym-mullioned windows. A two-light beaded mullioned window is present on the first floor.

Inside, the house features round-arched openings and a stone fireplace with a staff moulding and a moulded cornice.
