Description
This is a 16th-century cottage with 17th and early 18th-century additions, located on the west side of Church Walk in Melksham. It is attached to number 3. The cottage is constructed of rubble stone with square-panel timber framing to the first floor, which has been infilled with brick. It has a stone slate roof and a brick stack on the left side. The building has an L-shaped timber-framed structure with a stone extension forming a T-plan. It is two storeys high with a three-window front. A six-fielded panelled door is set within the central timber-framed gable. A four-pane sash window is to the right, and a twelve-pane sash window is to the left in the 17th-century timber-framed wing. Two 2-light splayed mullioned windows are on the right side of the 18th-century wing. The central gable has a wooden casement window, a casement to the left, and a 2-light cyma-mullioned window to the right. The left return elevation features a projecting chimney and a 2-light cyma-mullioned window on the ground floor. The interior has been recently renovated, and the cottage was originally a 16th-century house with a gable end facing the street, with wings added to either side in the 17th and early 18th centuries. There is a possibility that it was originally part of a larger house with number 3.
