St Dunstan'S

St Dunstan's is a former house, now a nursing home, dating from the mid-19th century and altered in the late 20th century. It is constructed of coursed, squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, lateral stacks, and a slate hipped roof, designed in the Tudor Gothic Revival style. The building has an irregular double-depth plan with side ranges, standing two storeys high with an attic and a three-window range.

The front is asymmetrical, featuring a ground-floor drip mould, cornice, and crenellated parapet, along with clasping octagonal corner buttresses topped with moulded ball finials. A projecting right-hand gable has a moulded parapet, a quatrefoil in an oculus, and a finial base. To the left of the gable is an ashlar porch with octagonal buttresses and a crenellated parapet, which contains a five-centre arched entrance with a 20th-century door. The windows are two- and three-light stone-mullioned types with five-centre arched heads and labels, featuring 6/6-pane sashes with arched top panes, and canted bays flanking the entrance. The left-hand wing is set back from the front and includes a small porch in the angle, with a one-window left return and two rear gables.

Inside, the entrance hall features a stair flight with square newels, Tudor-arched doors, and four-panel doors. Historically, this site is noted as the traditional location of the Council of Calne, presided over by St Dunstan in AD 978.
