Description

10 and 12 North Street are two cottages dating from the early to mid 18th century. They feature incised render over limestone rubble and have a continuous pantile roof with stone stacks that have rebuilt shafts at the gable ends. Each cottage has a single-unit plan with rear extensions and stands two storeys high with attics, each having one window range. No. 10, which is wider, has a blank wall on the far right that suggests a former open fire. It has a late 19th-century door and horned 2/2-pane sash windows. No. 12 has 20th-century windows and a door.

Inside No. 10, there is a rear door opposite the front door leading into a through-passage. The former open fire to the right is now part of a continuous wall with a 20th-century fireplace inserted. To the right of the fireplace, a 19th-century cupboard stairs rise to the first floor, where a cross-beam in the roof structure has been cut away to provide headroom. A 18th-century chamfered axial beam spans the ground floor room and passage, while a crudely-cut axial beam on the first floor is likely early 18th century, supported by a later 18th or 19th-century chamfered crossbeam attached with metal brackets. The floor is divided into two rooms, with the chamfering running out to the ends in each room.
