Description

The Vicarage, now a nursing home, dates to 1839. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, with ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The building is in the Tudor Revival style. The front elevation has two storeys and one and two bays, with an altered wing to the right that is now single-storeyed. Angle buttresses rise as octagonal pinnacles with finials. Window surrounds are moulded and quoined, with hoodmoulds. Stepped gables feature slit windows, ashlar copings, and finials. A porch to the second bay has diagonal buttresses and a Tudor-arched doorway (now window) under a hoodmould with lozenge stops; the gable is finialled with a shield inscribed "Erected AD 1839." Above the porch is a two-light mullioned window with tall 12-pane sashes, set beneath a continuous dripcourse and coped parapet. Bay 3 has similar windows to each floor, set in a continuous recess with mid-floor panels depicting a shield and ribbon motif; a gable is above. Bay 1, set back, is similar to bay 3. A chamfered, hooded doorway is located into the left return of bay 2. A projecting lateral stack is on the right return, and twin shafts are present on this stack, as are the end stacks of the main transverse ridge. The rear of the building has three bays, with a central recess and a small loggia featuring two pointed-arched openings and a part-glazed door. There are two-light windows matching those on the front porch, with gabled outer bays featuring corbelled corner pinnacles. The interior includes contemporary staircase and fireplaces of various designs. A previous list description suggests the architect was likely Henry Francis Lockwood of Hull.
