Description

Townsend Farmhouse, now a nursing home, dates to 1720 with subsequent development in the mid-18th century and 19th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone with a Collyweston slate roof. Originally designed with a 3-unit layout, it now has a 5-window front. A two-storey canted bay window was added in the 19th century and has casement windows on the ground floor and sash windows with glazing bars above. The remaining windows are casements, some with leaded lights, set beneath wooden lintels. A 6-panel door, located to the left of the centre, is sheltered by an early 20th-century porch. The building features ashlar gable parapets and ashlar stacks at the ridge and ends. An outbuilding to the rear, now incorporated into the house, has a datestone of 1720 on its quoins. There's evidence of two distinct construction phases visible on the rear elevation. The interior kitchen, to the left of the entrance, retains remnants of an open fireplace with a bressumer beam. Some original 18th-century two-panel doors with original ironmongery remain.
