Description

Nos 3 and 5 Castle Street are a pair of cottages, now combined into a single house, dating to the 18th century. The ground floor is built on a sarsen stone plinth, with walls above constructed of banded chalkstone and flint, incorporating brick dressings. The cottages have two storeys and originally comprised one narrow and one wider bay each. They feature boarded doors and timber casement windows with two and three lights, some retaining glazing bars and leaded lights. A central stack serves four flues. Internally, the structure includes haunched posts with angle braces, suggesting a possible original use as a barn associated with the adjacent property. There are also slightly chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
