Description

Pond House is an early 18th-century house located in The Square, Aldbourne. It is constructed of whitewashed sarsen rubble with brick dressings, and has a tiled roof with a central lead flat. The building is two storeys and originally four bays by two, although it lacks a principal facade. A central entrance is on the north side, with a glazed door. To the right, No. 5 has a separate entrance in bays 3 and 4. The windows are three-light, leaded, with segmental heads on the ground floor, and a central window featuring a large round leaded fanlight. The eaves are brick dentilled. The roof is hipped, with a left gable stack facing towards the village pond; an additional front stack has been added. To the right, there is a one-bay outbuilding raised to two storeys, matching the detail of the main building, and extending to the rear with a two-storey hipped bay. The rear elevation showcases tripartite 12-pane and 16-pane sash windows. The property was the site of the Wells bell foundry from 1760, a predecessor to the Whitechapel Bellfoundry.
