Description

A row of three cottages, dating from the late 18th century to the early 19th century, which have since been adapted for use as a library and workshop, replacing an earlier forge and cottage. The building is constructed of colourwashed stone rubble, with No. 3 being stuccoed, and has a tile roof. It extends for approximately six bays and is two stories high. The front features boarded doors, a pair of stable doors to the former Old Forge, and a fielded six-panel door to No. 3. The ground floor has timber casement windows with segmental heads. The workshop has strip glazing with oak lintels. The building has dentilled eaves. The left gable has been rebuilt. A stack is located to the right of No. 3, while other stacks have been removed. The row is listed for group value, as it is a significant element contributing to the enclosing character of The Square.
