Description

Numbers 9 and 10 are a pair of mid-19th century houses located on the west side of The Causeway in Chippenham. They feature a limestone ashlar facade with pilasters, an eaves band, and a hipped slate roof that has wide eaves and moulded ashlar ridge stacks. The sides of the houses are constructed from Flemish-bond brick with freestone dressings. Each house has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall, with a two-window range for each. The windows are 6/6-pane sash windows, and the doors, located at the rear of the returns, are positioned below the windows.

In front of both buildings, there is a squared, coursed limestone rubble wall approximately 1 meter high. At each end of the wall, there are pairs of piers topped with cornices and shallow pyramidal caps. The wall then rises for about 1.5 meters to freestone quoins, turns to the rear, and continues to rise to about 2 meters. There are 20th-century gates. The interior has not been inspected.
