Description

Causeway Methodist Church, built around 1853, is a building of group value. It is constructed from squared, coursed, rusticated limestone rubble with freestone dressings, and has a slate roof. The church is in a Decorated Gothic Revival style, and features a rectangular plan with a church hall to the rear. It has a symmetrical three-window facade. Three forward-facing gables have chamfered copings, crocketed finials, and blind slit windows at the apexes. The central gable is set back and contains a four-light pointed-arched window with Geometrical tracery. Below this window is a gabled doorcase with a pointed arch. The tympanum of this arch contains a leaded quatrefoil window, above a shouldered arch to the double doors, which themselves have two-light transomed stained-glass windows at the top and two panels below. Flanking the church are three-storey towers, each with elaborate clasping buttresses. A freestone and rubblestone rustication forms a ladder-like pattern on the towers, with gables to each facet above the second floor. The ground-floor windows have trefoil-headed leaded lights. Similar, taller first-floor windows have a blind trefoil above the light and gabled hoodmoulds cutting through string courses between the buttresses. A string course above the buttresses forms the sills to large pointed-arch openings, which penetrate the towers. The church room inside has central cast-iron pillars, and some windows have margin panes.
