Description
Numbers 8 and 9 Clifton Park are a pair of attached houses built in 1846. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with external and party wall stacks, and the roof is not visible. The houses are double-depth plan and designed in the Tudor Gothic Revival style.
Each house has two storeys, a basement and an attic, with a two-window front. The detailed, symmetrical front features projecting wings with small gables, and octagonal buttress-turrets with octagonal finials. There are weathered sill bands and a moulded parapet, with paired buttresses to the party wall linked by a raised parapet, and side entrances. The windows have stone mullions and transoms, with tall lower windows to metal casements. Shallow, canted outer bays contain four lights flanked by two, with blind tracery panelled parapets; above are smaller canted three-light bays with weathered heads. Other windows are three-light designs with raised, hollow drip moulds, without transoms to the attic. A circa 1970 concrete porch is on the right return, while the left return has an open porch with unglazed windows and a panelled parapet with a corner finial to a restored two-leaf half-glazed door with linenfold panels. The door has C20 stained-glass windows with crocketed ogee heads, and a two-light overlight. A left-hand gabled wing mirrors the front design but has corbelled octagonal finials to the attic, and a right-hand external stack. The linked octagonal stacks have cornices.
Inside Number 8, the entrance hall has a tiled floor and a Gothic cornice of quatrefoils. It formerly had a Tudor arch to the stair, and features six-panel doors with panelled reveals, and shutters. Attached to the front and side basement areas are spear-headed railings, along with front garden railings, gates and piers. A good balustrade of cusped circles is present at Number 9. The houses are similar in style and composition to numbers 6 and 7, but more richly decorated.
