Description

An attached pair of houses dating to around 1850, designed by Charles Underwood. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with lateral and party wall stacks, and the roof is not visible. They have a double-depth plan arranged in an L-shape. The design is Neoclassical, with each house spanning two storeys, a basement, and an attic, and incorporating a three-window front. The symmetrical front features shallow projecting wings, clasping pilasters, a frieze with rosettes, a dentil cornice, and an attic storey with a moulded coping. Side entrances are present, along with a full right-hand elevation. The wings have three-light bays with balustrades; ground-floor windows are recessed and feature rosettes on the lintels, while first-floor windows are tripartite with subsidiary pilasters, architraves to the middle windows, and incised surrounds to the attic windows. Sash windows are present, some with horizontal bars. A late 20th-century concrete entrance block is located on the left-hand side. The right-hand elevation displays a symmetrical three-window range, and includes a full-height three-light bow in the centre. A long, single-storey covered passage extends from the doorway, featuring a side arcade of semicircular-arched windows—3:3:2—separated by panelled pilasters. The arcade contains casements with fanlights and a balustrade of linked rings, culminating in an open porch with a semicircular arch, side lunettes, and clasping pilasters. The interior of the houses has not been inspected. The detailing and fenestration closely resemble those of Underwood’s Worcester Terrace, particularly the end houses.
