Description

Clifton High School, located at 3 and 4 Clifton Park, consists of a pair of attached houses that were converted into a school around 1850, possibly designed by Charles Underwood. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features lateral and party wall stacks, although the roof is not visible. It is designed in a Neoclassical style with a double-depth plan, comprising two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a symmetrical front that includes shallow wings.

The ground floor is banded, leading to a central panel and a plat band, with paired corner and central pilasters supporting a Doric entablature adorned with triglyphs and a cornice that is interrupted by attic windows and pilasters. The doorways at each end have porches; No. 3 features banded corners and a balustrade, along with a semicircular-arched doorway and overlights, while No. 4 has paired pilasters and a balustrade leading to recessed doors with two-leaf half-glazed doors. The wings contain bays with tripartite windows and balustrades, architraves to 20th-century ground floor casements, and two-over-two pane sash windows. The rear of the doorways also has tripartite windows.

Inside, No. 3 has a tiled hall with an open-well stair that is screened by semicircular arches, featuring cast-iron balusters, a curtail, and a smooth soffit. No. 4 has a dogleg stair. The front rooms have a decorative plaster scheme and are linked by a segmental arch with folding doors. There are marble fireplaces, one lined with pewter and the other supported by detached columns, along with six-panel doors and panelled shutters.

The property also includes subsidiary features such as cast-iron railings and gates, as well as piers for the basement areas and the front garden wall.
