Description

Clifton High School, located at 5 Clifton Park, is a pair of attached houses that were converted into a school around 1850 by Charles Underwood. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar and features lateral stacks, although the roof is not visible. It is designed in a Neoclassical style and has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a symmetrical front facing College Road that has a central section that projects forward. This central area is adorned with pilasters, a frieze, a dentil cornice, and a coped attic storey. The outer ground floor is banded, and there is a full-height central three-light bow window, which is flanked by subordinate pilasters and features recessed lintels with rosettes above two-over-two pane sash windows. The outer tripartite ground-floor windows have similar detailing, while the upper floors have architraves and six-over-six pane sashes, with three-over-three panes in the attic.

The left-hand return of the building also has a three-window range, and at the rear, there is a single-storey former conservatory with pilasters supporting an entablature. The entrance is located at the rear.

Inside, there is a central rear open dogleg stair leading to the first floor, featuring Greek Revival-style cast-iron balusters. The interior also includes six-panel doors with panelled reveals, panelled shutters, cornices, and ceiling roses.

The property has attached basement area cast-iron railings. It shares similar architectural details and fenestration with the end houses of Worcester Terrace, also designed by Underwood. Extensions from the 1960s are not included in this listing. The building is now connected to a mid-20th-century entrance.
