The Black Dog

The Black Dog is an inn that dates from the late 17th century, with later additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It features dressed limestone construction, a tiled roof, and brick stacks, arranged in an L-plan. The building is two stories high with a three-window front. The central entrance is a 20th-century door set within a gabled porch. To the right is a 20th-century casement window, while to the left is a three-light casement. On the first floor, there are two 2-light and one 3-light recessed chamfered mullioned windows.

To the left, there is a projecting early 19th-century wing made of English bond brick, which has a canted bay and a 16-pane sash window on the front, along with a 4-pane sash and a 6-panelled door with a keystone on the return. The left return also features 2-light and 1-light mullioned windows. There is a single-storey brewhouse that includes a 16-pane sash and a 3-light casement. At the rear, there is a 19th-century brick lean-to extension with a slate roof, and to the right is an 18th-century brewhouse, now used as a bar, made of stone with a slate roof.

Inside, the front range has chamfered beams with stepped stops, an open fireplace with chamfered stone jambs and a chamfered lintel. The rear brewhouse features beaded beams and a stone open fireplace with a cambered stone lintel.
