Description

The Chilmark War Memorial is located in a cemetery to the south-east of the churchyard of St Margaret of Antioch, which is a Grade II*-listed church.

The memorial features a four-stepped octagonal base topped by an octagonal plinth, a tapering octagonal shaft, and a Latin cross made of Chilmark stone. The southern face of the plinth has the inscription: "TO THE GLORY/ OF GOD AND IN/ MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO/ FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918." The other seven sides of the plinth list the names of those commemorated, including one woman.

On the southern face of the top step, it reads: "THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE," while the northern face of the same step has the date "1939-1945." The adjacent faces on either side each display a name.
