Description

Chilmark Manor is a detached house dating back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. The house is constructed of coursed dressed limestone, with a tiled roof and 20th-century brick stacks. It has a U-shaped layout, and the main entrance is located on The Barberry, opening into a small courtyard enclosed on three sides.

The two-storey front elevation has a 20th-century porch and door, above which is a four-light recessed chamfered mullioned window. A hipped dormer is positioned above. The flanking wings each feature three-light recessed mullioned windows on both the ground and first floors, with hoodmoulds over the ground floor windows. The fourth side of the courtyard is defined by good stone walls with saddleback coping which sweeps up to the wings. Ashlar gatepiers with moulded capping and ball finials mark the entrance. The front elevations of the wings are windowless, displaying coped verges.

The left return facing The Street has a tall four-light recessed chamfered window with a hoodmould to the right, and a two-light mullioned window to the left. The first floor features a two-light window with a hoodmould and a four-light mullioned window to the right. An attic window in the left side of the main range is a single recessed chamfered light. The rear and right return elevations incorporate one-, two- and three-light recessed mullioned windows; the rear elevation has two hipped dormers. The interior of the house was inaccessible at the time of inspection in March 1985.
