Description
The Old White Lion is a coaching inn that has been in use as an inn and dates from the 16th, 17th, and 19th centuries. It is constructed of cut squared limestone with a stone slate roof featuring coped gables on the left and to the street, and a large stack at the left gable. The building is long and deep, with a three-storey gable facing the street and a lower section with right eaves. There is also a deep projection at the back, which was formerly the malt house or brewery from the 19th century.
The structure has three storeys and a cellar. The gable features chamfered mullion casements with stopped drips, arranged as three-light over four-light with a king mullion, over three-light. In the right-hand section, which is separately built, there are two small gabled dormers above a canted bay with a swept-down roof, featuring sashes and an offset plinth. Between the two parts of the building, there is a four-centred stone arch with a stopped drip leading to the doorway.
At the back, the brewhouse includes two large 20-pane sash windows and a door at the first floor, accessed by a flight of external stone steps. Inside, there is a large Tudor-arched stone lintel fireplace on the left side of the front, and at ceiling level to the right of this, there are some quarter circle stone segments, possibly originating from destroyed Abbey buildings. The interior also features heavy chamfered beams and some timber-framed walls and partitions.
