Description

The Forge is a former smithy located on Totnes Road in Cockington, likely dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, though it has earlier origins. The building is constructed from local stone rubble with some cob on the front and features a thatched roof over the main forge, while the outshut has a tiled roof.

The smithy is situated at a crossroads in the village, facing northwest, and includes a lean-to outshut at the rear. It is a single-storey structure with a tall roof that extends over a covered working area. The open working area has a cobbled floor supported by three posts. The front of the smithy features a doorway with an ancient two-flap door and a shuttered window to the right. The left side wall facing Cockington Lane has two windows, with the right window consisting of four lights and internal shutters. The lean-to outshut also has a doorway with an ancient two-flap door. The roof is hipped at both ends and slopes down to a lower level over the working area. Evidence of earlier origins is visible in the blockings and butt joins in the walls.

Inside, there is a doorway from the outshut to the forge that contains another ancient door. The roof appears to have been rebuilt in the 20th century. The forge is fully operational, with a flue rising against the southwest wall. The Forge is an important part of a particularly attractive group of listed buildings in this unspoilt village, adjacent to Cockington Park.
