Description
The Studio, formerly known as The Granary, is a building located on Totnes Road in Cockington, Torquay. It is likely a granary that was associated with the nearby water mill, which has been restored and is now a souvenir shop. The building has undergone significant alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of local stone rubble and features a thatched roof.
The building is oriented on a rough east/west axis, with the east end facing the lane. It stands two storeys tall. The exterior has been mostly modernized in the 20th century, with a wide front shop window that appears to block a former cart entrance, which has a segmental arch head. There is a smaller arch on the right end leading to a porch and a side entrance to the shop. Close behind the porch, there is a projection with canted sides, the purpose of which is unknown. The rear of the building has external stone steps leading to a door on the first floor. The south side features 20th-century windows and doors, some of which are in older openings. The thatch eaves have eyebrows over the openings, and the tall, steeply pitched thatch roof is hipped at both ends and contains dormer windows.
The interior appears to have been largely modernized in the 20th century, and the roof was not inspected. The Studio, along with the other buildings associated with the mill, contributes to an exceptionally attractive group of listed buildings in the unspoilt village and the adjoining Cockington Park, which is why it is included for its group value.
