Description
Lanscombe Farmhouse, now divided into two cottages named Lanscombe Farmhouse and Orchard View, dates from the early 17th century, with possible origins in an earlier period. The building is constructed of plastered cob and stone rubble, with stone rubble chimney shafts topped with brick, and a thatched roof. Originally, it had a 3-room and cross-passage plan, though this was altered when the property was converted into cottages. The cross passage was likely situated to the south-east of the centre, and the south-east end room features a large projecting gable-end stack. The centre room, originally the hall, has a projecting front lateral stack, while the north-west end room possesses an end stack. The exterior is irregular, with a 4-window front featuring various 19th and 20th century timber casements, some containing leaded glass. The left cottage has an early 17th-century doorway with a moulded oak frame, housing a fine contemporary studded plank door with an applied 12-panel front and ornamental strap hinges. A 20th-century hood projects from the roof above the entrance to the hall bay on the right. The right cottage (Orchard View) has a 19th-century door. The roof is gable-ended to the left and half-hipped to the right. Limited inspection of the ground floor of the left end revealed a blocked passage, a 19th-century staircase, a fireplace with a 19th-century chimney-piece, and a plain chamfered crossbeam. Original carpentry and other features are suspected to be present, although much of it is concealed by later plaster. Lanscombe Farmhouse and Orchard View contribute to the attractive group of listed buildings within the unspoilt village, situated adjacent to Cockington Park.
