Description
Court Cottages is a house that was converted to a house and shop, originally built around 1700 with 20th-century alterations. It features a structure made of plastered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof that has a plain ridge and is half hipped at the ends. The building is set into the slope of the land and has a long single-depth, three-room plan, with the left end room likely converted from an agricultural building or cider house, evidenced by a cobbled floor and drain found during renovations.
The exterior is picturesque, consisting of two storeys and a long asymmetrical front with five windows, four of which are on the first floor. There are 20th-century stone rubble buttresses and eaves that are eyebrowed over the right-hand window while sweeping down at the left end. The approximately central 20th-century two-leaf small-pane glazed front door is accompanied by a projecting lateral stack with a bread oven and an adjoining windowed bay. There is a second doorway to the right of the centre. The building boasts a good set of six high-transomed, two-light mullioned windows from around 1700, which are moulded on the inner face and glazed with square leaded panes, some of which retain original window furniture. Other windows are small two-light casements. The left return, which is part of the present shop, features a large three-light window with square leaded panes.
Inside, the carpentry detail is plain, with some two-panel doors dating back to around 1700. The roof consists of A-frames with lap-jointed collars that reflect a 1700 character and are extended at both ends of the range. Court Cottages is part of a group of exceptionally attractive listed buildings in an unspoilt village.
