Description

Rose Cottage is a house with a shop, likely dating to the 18th century or early 19th century, although it may have earlier origins. The building is constructed of plastered cob and stone rubble, with brick chimney shafts and a thatched roof. The ground floor has been cleared of internal partitions to create a shop space. Two opposing front and rear doorways suggest a passage originally existed between two rooms. A larger room on the left has a projecting rear lateral chimney stack, while another rear stack is located to the right room. The front elevation has a regular three-window facade with 19th and 20th century replacement casement windows containing glazing bars. The front door, situated to the right of centre, is a 6-panel door behind a gabled thatched porch supported by rustic posts. The roof is hipped at both ends and extends to the right over a lean-to outshut on the south-west side, where a 16-pane sash window is located on the rear. The ground floor interior was gutted in the mid-20th century and lacks any exposed earlier features. Rose Cottage is part of a group of listed buildings within the attractive, unspoiled village of Cockington, alongside Cockington Park.
