Description
Home Farmhouse is an early 17th-century farmhouse with later alterations, located on Cockington Lane, Cockington. The walls are plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with a stone rubble chimney shaft raised with brick, and an asbestos tile roof previously thatched. The building is L-shaped. The main block faces west, built across a hillslope and terraced at the rear, with a two-room plan and a stairhall in between. The larger northern room has a large projecting rear lateral chimney stack. A smaller northern service crosswing contains a former dairy and a second stair.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics in the main block. The front has an irregular two-window arrangement, mostly with 20th-century casement windows. However, one early 17th-century four-light oak window with chamfered mullions survives. The front door, initially located right of centre, is now behind a 20th-century porch. On the left return wall of the crosswing is an early 17th-century moulded oak door frame containing a contemporary studded plank door with an applied six-panel front, strap hinges, and a working lock. The main roof is gable-ended on the right and hipped on the left, extending over the crosswing.
The interior has largely undergone 19th and 20th-century modernization, but some later 17th and early 18th-century joinery remains, including a fielded three-panel door. The dairy retains slate shelves. Home Farmhouse, together with its farm buildings, forms part of a group of listed buildings in an unspoiled village and adjacent Cockington Park.
