Description

The Mill, formerly known as the Water Mill to Granary, is a late 19th-century water mill located on Totnes Road in Cockington, now functioning as a cafeteria. The wheel, dated 1878, likely has older origins and has undergone significant restoration in the 20th century, reflecting a style associated with Sir Edwin Lutyens. The building is constructed of local stone rubble and features a thatched roof.

It is a long structure oriented on a north-west/south-east axis, with an overshot wheel situated on the south-west side. The south-east end is set into the hillside and includes a wide loading doorway from the terrace. There are external stone steps leading to a first-floor doorway on the north-east side.

The building has two storeys and has been extensively restored in the 20th century. While many of the openings are likely original, they now contain 20th-century windows and a doorway. The stone steps are also from the 20th century and feature a niche with a basin over a small ornamental pond. The north-west end has a full-height opening that has been blocked, with ranges of windows on each floor. The cast-iron wheel bears the founders' mark of H Beare and Sons from Newton Abbot, dated 1878. The roof is hipped at both ends, with wide eyebrows over the openings.

The interior has been remodeled in the 20th century, including the roof. Remnants of ancillary mill buildings are located to the south-west and north-west but are not included in the listing. The Mill is part of a particularly attractive group of listed buildings in this unspoilt village, adjacent to Cockington Park.
