Description
The former smithy, likely built in the late 18th century, is located to the east of Sawmill Cottage in Askham. It features mixed limestone and cobble rubble walls topped with a graduated greenslate roof, which includes a central square vented cupola. The building is single storey and consists of two bays. There is a large segmental-arched doorway in the center and a 20th-century window to the right in a 20th-century opening. To the right, there is a lean-to extension with a plank door. The left gable wall facing the road has a blocked stone-surround doorway. The smithy is marked on the 25-inch Ordnance Survey map and has group value with Sawmill Cottage.
