Description

This is a house, built around 1840, and subsequently divided into flats. It is located on Babbage Road, Torquay. The house is stuccoed with a slate roof, and has chimneys with stuccoed shafts and platbands. The original plan included a main two-story block and a rear service wing at a right angle.

The front elevation is asymmetrical, with three bays. It has deep eaves with a boarded soffit. The central entrance features a four-panel door and a plain overlight, above which is a tall round-headed niche on the first floor. A twelve-pane sash window is on the ground floor to the right, while the windows to the left are blind. The first-floor window to the right is a twelve-pane sash with an ornate cast-iron balcony decorated with anthemion motifs and Vitruvian scrolls. The left return, facing the garden, has central niches on both floors, as well as first-floor twelve-pane sashes with matching cast-iron balconies. Ground floor windows on this elevation are probably later. The rear wing has two first-floor twelve-pane sashes and modern ground-floor windows. The interior has been altered for conversion into flats.
