Description

The Grove is a house built in the 1840s, with the date of 1849 found on paintwork during renovations. It was re-planned internally and thoroughly restored externally in the 1990s. The exterior features stucco and a slate roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts, reflecting a cottage ornee style. The house has a deep rectangular central staircase plan with some rear additions.

It stands two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front, where the outer bays are bowed and gabled. The eaves are very deep, supported by massive brackets, and there are pierced ornamental bargeboards with apex pendants. A central gabled porch showcases elaborate bargeboards and buttresses, along with a Tudor-arched doorway. The outer bays have 20th-century French windows, while the first floor features two-light 20th-century timber casements, with the central window having arched heads.

The interior has been modernized and replanned. The Grove is part of a collection of picturesque small houses located on the steep, wooded cliffside above Babbacombe beach. Prior to its renovation, the house was derelict and vandalized.
