Description

St Anne's Hall is a building used as a men's club, constructed in 1883, as indicated by a datestone. It is built from snecked local grey limestone with yellow freestone dressings and features peg-tile roofs that are hipped and half-hipped, adorned with crested ridge tiles. The design reflects the Arts and Crafts style. The hall is oriented on a south-west to north-east axis, positioned at right angles to Babbacombe Road, and has three wings extending from its south-east side.

The exterior consists of two storeys. The hall has a half-hipped roof at both ends, with ventilation pots along the ridge, while the wings also have hipped roofs. The stone-mullioned windows include large ones with transoms, all glazed with leaded panes, and there is a moulded string course. The north-east front has a 1:2 window arrangement and a porch block to the right. The central half-hipped end of the hall features buttresses, including a central buttress with a gabled top. The deep eaves and verges have bargeboards with cusped and pierced details, supported by curved timber brackets that spring from the buttresses. There are two segmental-headed basement windows and two first-floor windows with two transoms and cusped heads. The left wing includes a half-dormer with a hipped roof. The porch block to the right has a moulded stone doorway topped with an ogival peak, original paired plank doors, and a three-light traceried overlight with stained glass. The left return has five windows, a doorway to the left, triangular dormers, and two minor flat-roofed additions. The south-west end of the hall is similar in style but slightly plainer than the entrance elevation, with a battered corner on the wing to the right.

The interior has not been inspected but may still contain interesting original features, including the roof. Overall, St Anne's Hall is a well-preserved example of Arts and Crafts architecture.
