Description

The Babbacombe Cliff Hotel, originally known as Cliffside Cottage Hotel, was built in 1878 by WE Nesfield and extended around the 1920s, with some later alterations in the late 20th century. It is currently used as holiday flats. The hotel is constructed of snecked local grey limestone rubble with sandstone dressings, some slate-hanging, and a natural scantle slate roof, with stacks featuring moulded brick shafts and caps. It is designed in the Arts and Crafts style. The building has an overall L-plan, with the main block facing north towards the sea and a west wing at a right angle, incorporating a carriageway through its north end. A circa 1920s extension is located at the east end of the main block.

The earlier part of the main block has a two-window facade with a slate pentice at first-floor level and a moulded timber arched doorway. A single-storey addition is set to the right. A canted bay, slate-hung to the left, has a deep gable with a three-light attic window above; a three-light window is to the right. The right return of the west wing, which is also slate-hung on the first floor, features two gabled, two-tier canted oriels to the left, with pargetted coving, ovolo-moulded mullioned windows with leaded panes (the first floor has transoms). A similar oriel is situated to the right, above the carriageway. The right return of this wing has a projecting timber look-out, supported on deep timber brackets.

The interior includes an original staircase, good tiling to the entrance lobby, and a pressed paper moulded ceiling in a first-floor room at the north end of the west wing.
