Description
This is a terrace of five houses located on Babbage Downs Road in Babbacombe, Torquay. They were built in the late 1840s or early 1850s. The houses are stuccoed and have natural slate roofs with hipped ends, and rendered stacks with cornices. Each house is double-depth and one room wide.
The facades are two storeys with a one-window front to each house. Deep eaves have a moulded fascia. The original four-panel front doors have plain fanlights, with the exception of number 49, which is located on the right end of the terrace. Windows are 2-pane sashes, with horizontal glazing bars; some first-floor windows have been replaced. First-floor windows are set in rectangular recesses in the stucco and have Venetian blinds with fretted fascias that extend across the recesses. Verandahs run across the front of the terrace, some of which are glazed. Number 53 retains some original features of its verandah, including the trellis standard and fascia, while the others have plain replacements. The interiors have not been inspected, but may contain features of interest.
