Description

The range of barns located about 4 metres west of Newhouse Farmhouse dates from the late 18th century and has undergone later alterations. Constructed from rubble with stone dressings, the barns feature stone slate roofs that have raised coped verges, kneelers, and finials. The south barn displays a high gabled cart entry on its south elevation, flanked by lean-tos that continue the slope of the main roof. The right side has a 4-pane window in the gable end and stepped stonework beneath the verges. The rear includes a cart entry with a heavy cambered timber lintel and a half-hipped roof, along with a lean-to on the left side similar to the front. The lower barn to the right has a blocked window, a cart entry at eaves height, and a 20th-century addition in corrugated iron. There is an external blue brick stair on the right, a loading door, two ventilation slits, a lower door, and a 4-pane light. The north elevation features a door and a two-light casement window in the gable end with a stop-chamfered stone mullion. Attached to the west is an L-plan shelter shed with seven bays supported by timber piers at the eaves. The western bay is closed with doors, and the roof consists of a tie-beam with two struts, principal rafters, and two rows of purlins. The interior of the barns is not accessible.
