Description
The Chipping Sodbury Tunnel East Portal is a 19th-century structure made of engineering brick with stone dressings. It features a circular horseshoe tunnel mouth, which is surrounded by a brick architrave. The design includes roll moulding and a large stone keystone. Flanking the arch are piers that rise above a panelled parapet, with very small wing walls on either side that meet the rubble-lined cutting. The portal is adorned with stone bands and coping that have quarry-faced moulding.
This portal is situated deep within a lined cutting in a pastoral landscape, located one mile south-west of Badminton House.
