Description
The Chipping Sodbury Tunnel West Portal is a Grade II listed structure made primarily of squared and coursed quarry-faced sandstone, with an engineering brick arch ring. The portal features a horseshoe-shaped tunnel mouth with a moulded engineering brick arch that includes an outer roll and a prominent keystone. It is flanked by striking raked piers designed as broad pilasters, which extend above the parapet. The straight wing walls are located outside the piers. The entire elevation is adorned with a triple-stepped cornice and projecting coping, which contribute to a central parapet projection resting on the keystone.
This portal is situated into a hillside just below the village of Old Sodbury, providing a picturesque backdrop when viewed from an overbridge a few hundred meters to the west. From this vantage point, one can also see one of the tunnel's castellated vents on the crest of the hill behind the village.
