Description
The Severn Tunnel East Portal is a Grade II* listed structure made of limestone ashlar, which may consist of two different types, resulting in a variation of color above and below the cornice line. The portal features a continuous radius horseshoe arch that is highlighted by a large roll moulding. This arch is set within a straight elevation that is defined by four prominent projecting piers. The two slightly battered piers flank the tunnel mouth, while another pair marks the ends of the wing walls. A simple stepped string course or cornice runs across the entire elevation, topped with a bold coping. The piers are further accentuated by an additional stage to their coping. In the center of the parapet, there is a heavily worn plaque panel.
The designation applies only to the visible tunnel mouth and the short stone return inside it. Although the Severn Tunnel is recognized as a remarkable achievement in railway engineering, it is not included in this designation. The west portal, located in Wales, is also not designated.
