Description
The six vent shafts above Chipping Sodbury Tunnel were built by the Great Western Railway and are made of contrasting red and purple engineering brick with stone dressings. These shafts are circular and have a battered design, constructed using engineering brick laid in English bond. They feature machicolations and a castellated parapet, with stone corbels for the stepped machicolation and steeply pitched coping. The heights of the shafts range from approximately 4 to 8 meters.
The shafts rise from a pastoral landscape, each one adjacent to a spoil heap, which sometimes has a levelled top. There is also the alignment of a tramway nearby, used for transporting spoil away from the shafthead.
